Add-A-Pearl
Continuing a Muskegon Tradition
We are pleased to be the heir to A. Krautheim Jeweler's add-a-pearl program, carrying the same high quality as Krautheim's did, continuing the tradition. We have all of Krautheim's records, so if you or someone you know had an add-a-pearl necklace started at Krautheim's, we have the information.
Add A Pearl is now available for sale at Krautheim & Swanson GemWorks.
What is Add-A-Pearl?
The add-on pearl program is a way to assemble a pearl necklace one pearl at a time. The necklace usually begins with a single pearl on a chain. Over the years, as individual pearls are added, the necklace grows into a beautiful full strand of lustrous pearls.
We will keep a record of your name and the size of the pearls on your necklace, so when you or your family and friends wish to add to it for special occasions, we will be able to advise you as to what sizes should next be selected toward the completion of a lovely necklace.
What kind of pearls can be added on?
Our Add-A-Pearl plans can be done with natural oriental pearls, or Akoya (saltwater) cultured pearls. Natural pearls are found, formed by an oyster without human intervention, making them quite rare and prized. Cultured pearls are "farmed" in a way; the pearl forms around a seed placed into an oyster by humans. The pearls we carry for Add-A-Pearl are a consistent color and quality, so that pearls purchased years apart will always match each other.
To protect pearls, they are strung on a thread, which is then attached to the chain of the necklace. If the pearls were directly on the chain, the metal of the chain would wear away at the pearls. Pearls may be strung without knots in between, or with a knot between each pearl for added security. As the pearl part of the necklace grows, the chain may be clipped away to keep the necklace the desired length.
